Obituary For Adele Elizabeth 'Betty' Erikson

Adele Elizabeth "Betty" Hullinger Erikson, Rapid City, 91, died Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, at West Hills Health Care. She was born to Harvey J. and Vera Weaver Hullinger, May 08, 1918. She graduated from Vivian High School, attended Southern Normal School, earning her B.S. in Education at Black Hills State College in 1969 and M.S. in Reading Development at the University of Northern Colorado in 1971. She was a lifelong professional educator, teaching a total of 42 years in schools in rural Lyman County (five years), Martin (three years), Platte (seven years), Vivian (one year), and Rapid City's Robbinsdale Elementary (26 years). After her retirement from the school system, she tutored reading students privately for many years. She married Bennie Erikson in the historic Hilmoe Lutheran Church in 1950, and they farmed near Vivian until 1956, when they moved to Rapid City. After his passing in 1985, she moved to West Hills in 1987. She had been a member of First Presbyterian Church of Rapid City, Delta Kappa Gamma, Kappa Delta Pi, the International Reading Association, Vivian American Legion Auxiliary, TOPS, and Sons of Norway. Betty is survived by one sister, Sylvia (Floyd) Fuoss of Sioux Falls, five nieces, and two nephews, and the many members of her husband's extended family. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and one sister, Iris Benware, of Albany, N.Y.
