Arnold R. Schumacher passed away October 30, 2020, at the age of 91 at Good Samaritan in New Underwood, SD, from complications from Covid. He was born on the family farm on June 1, 1929, in Hosmer, SD, to Adam and Martha (Dabbert) Schumacher. He attended country school until he graduated from the 8th grade and was needed to help on the family farm. He worked hard on the farm until he was drafted into the Army in 1951 and honorably discharged in 1953 at the rank of Corporal. He served in Korea and talked fondly of his Army buddies and his experiences. He was presented an award from the Korean government in 2015. After being discharged from the Army and returning to the family farm, he met the love of his life, Genevieve (Jenny) Menzia and they were married in Aberdeen, SD, on December 31, 1954. They moved to Rapid City, SD, where he attended technical school. Their only daughter, Joan, was born in 1960. After a short time in Grand Island, NE, they returned to Rapid where Arnie worked at various jobs, the longest was on the kill floor at Black Hills Packing Plant for 26 years until their closure in 1990. After the packing plant closed, Arnie and Jenny cleaned for Rushmore Bank & Trust for several years until they retired. In his retirement, he enjoyed many hours spent with his granddaughter, Rebecca. They were the best of buddies through thick and thin. In 2017, after a bout of influenza and pneumonia he was unable to return home so he moved to Good Samaritan in New Underwood, SD, where he could be found entertaining the staff with his stories or his songs. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jenny, his sister, Verdella (Alvin) Stahlecker, daughter Joan and her husband Kevin Myers, granddaughter Rebecca and her husband Andrew Kapelewski and his great granddaughter, Reagan. If there were kids or pups in a room, they were generally found close to Arnie. He spent many hours reading stories, first to his daughter and then to his granddaughter, and playing school or a multitude of other games with Becca. His sparkling brown eyes and mischievious grin will be missed along with his quick wit and infectious laugh. He was preceded in death by his parents, Adam and Martha, brother-in-law, Alvin, and numerous aunts and uncles. Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
