Obituary For Bernadine J. Gerving
Bernadine (Bernie) J. Morman Gerving was born to Robert & Eva Morman on August 28, 1946 in Bismarck, North Dakota. She grew up on the family farm in Haymarsh and was the middle child of 11 siblings. She cared for younger siblings, pet cows, and kittens alike on the farm. Bernie graduated from Hebron High School in 1964 and married her high-school sweetheart, Lynn Gerving, on October 3, 1964. Bernie and Lynn moved to Deadwood, South Dakota in 1968 and lived there until moving to Rapid City, South Dakota in 1999.
Bernie was an exemplary wife and mother. She was known far and wide for her incredible baked goods, her creative spirit (which led her to become the co-creator of the famed family game, Butt Darts), as well as her unique ability to invent new rules for any game she was playing. Bernie enjoyed crafts, painting, sewing, and took pride in her elaborate holiday decorations.
A woman of deep faith, Bernie trusted in God's love and grace. Her faith was the foundation of her relationships.
Bernie's smile and laughter were contagious and brightened every room, even during her frequent hospital stays. She offered kindness and comfort to all, never turning anyone away. As a mother and grandmother, she provided constant love, wisdom, and support. Her nurturing spirit, ability to listen, and easily forgive made her a rock for her family.
Bernie passed away peacefully with family by her side on November 27, 2024, in Rapid City, South Dakota, following her rigorous battle against leukemia.
Bernie is survived by her loving and faithful husband of 60 years, Lynn Gerving; her 6 children, Cherie Manzano, Brian Gerving, Mark Gerving, John Gerving, Carissa Gerving, Rob Gerving, their spouses; 23 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; brothers Bob Morman, Aaron Morman, sisters Irene Wehri, Audrey Wulf, Benita Remfert, and Grace Carter. Bernie is preceded in death by her parents, Robert & Eva Morman, her brothers Merril Morman and Charles (Chuck) Morman; sisters Roberta Mollman and Donna Dupong.
In lieu of flowers, her family requests donations to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital or the Leukemia Lymphoma Society be made in her name.
Rest in peace, Bernie. Your love, laughter, and light will forever guide us.
