Obituary For Bertha S. Johnson

Bertha S. Johnson, 99, Rapid City, died Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011, at RC Regional Hospital. On August 1, 1912, Bertha entered the world, the third of four daughters born to Harry and Alice Richards. She grew up on the family homestead outside of Newell, attending country school through eighth grade and then graduating from Newell High School. She married Fred E. Johnson in 1932 and to this union were born four children. She and Fred began their married life in Newell, moving next to New Underwood and settling in Rapid City. In 1941, they went into business for themselves, establishing Johnson Machine. Bertha was a charter member of the Does Drove 33, and also was active in garden club, First Presbyterian Women, and a local china painting group. She won many ribbons on her china painting entries at the Central States Fair and could always be counted on to have many other craft projects underway. After Fred’s death, Bertha moved to Westhills Village but remained active through her various interests. Her hands always were busy with a craft project, jigsaw puzzle or flowers. She approached every day as an opportunity to learn something new. Bertha will be sorely missed by her surviving children: Rob of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., Sylvia (Jerry) Haag of Olpe, Kan., and James of Lincoln, Mont.; as well as her 13 grandchildren, 24 great- grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Freddie, and daughter-in-law Willa.Bertha’s sense of humor and zest for life touched the lives of many. Through her pioneering spirit, she taught us to do our best with what we’re given and to look forward to what each new day has to offer.
