Obituary For Craig S Johnson

Craig Stanley Johnson, 73, of Black Hawk, SD passed away on October 3rd, 2022, at his home. Craig was born July 28th, 1949, to David Joe and Arlene Johnson in Rapid City, SD as the youngest of four brothers – Darrell, Ken, and Larry. Although school may not have been his favorite as a child, he graduated from Rapid City High School in 1968 and later went on to achieve several vocational degrees from Western Dakota VoTech. He worked for Coca-Cola, Safeway, the Black Hills Meat Packing Plant, as a horse breeder, an electrician, and a long-haul trucker for over 20 years.

He always had a love for traveling and viewing the various landscapes of the United States instilled in him from an early age as his parents and brothers would take him on trips around the Black Hills and out to California to visit eldest brother Darrell and his wife Marge and their children, Mark, Scott, and Cathy. After high school he and his older brother Ken embarked on an Alaskan canoe trip that he would often recall memories from his adventures.

He married Victoria Ruth Gould (Rombough) in April 1981 and welcomed stepdaughter Jessica Jo Ann Gould and a few months later their son Joshua Seth Johnson into the family. They were later divorced in 1997 but were always present for both children throughout their various school activities, college, and life.

He went into semi-retirement early and enjoyed touring the United States with his long-time companion Sharon and would love to visit the Grand Tetons, Rockies, Pacific Northwest and Southwest regions of the United States. He always found peace and wonderment in nature and God’s creations and loved to camp beneath the stars. He was always quick to make new friends and strike up a conversation that could last for hours and enjoyed random run-ins with old friends, neighbors, and classmates.

Craig is survived by his son, Joshua Johnson, Minneapolis, MN; stepdaughter, Jessica Lucas, (and Matthew Lucas) Hill City, SD; grandchildren Bridger and Kimber Lucas; brothers Larry Johnson (and Janice Johnson) Rapid City, SD; Kenneth Johnson (and Mary Johnson) Rapid City, SD; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Craig is preceded in death by both his parents and eldest brother Darrell Johnson and his wife Marge Johnson.
