Obituary For Crystal Cathleen Hanna
Crystal Cathleen Beld Hanna passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Monument Health Rapid City Hospital on August 29, 2020 after an acute battle with pneumonia. She was born April 29, 1947 to John and Dorothy Beld in Hettinger, ND. She was the second oldest of seven children. They lived on a farm South of Lodgepole, SD where she learned to love the land and acquired an incredible work ethic. She attended Fredland School through the eighth grade, a one room country school in Perkins County South Dakota and went on to graduate from Hettinger High School in 1966.
She married Gery Hanna July 5, 1966 in Bison, SD. They adopted two children, a daughter, Maggie in 1967 and a son, Tim in 1969. Their little family moved a few times while Gery was a police officer, then settled on the Hanna family farm South of Hettinger. After moving into Hettinger in 1979 Crystal ran an in-home daycare for a couple of years. The family grew with the birth of a son, Scott in 1980. She went on to earn her CDL and started driving School Bus for the Hettinger School System. She was loved by her bus kids over the 37 years she drove. The family gained its final member in 1987 when she gave birth to a son, Shawn.
Crystal had a Servants heart, she drove the Senior Citizens van; delivered Senior meals; and volunteered at the Community Clothes Closet. She delighted in making little kids smile annually as she played Mrs. Santa Claus for over 30 years in Hettinger. She touched many lives in her community over the years, people often shared that her bright smile and easy-going personality were some of her most endearing traits. She loved to visit and did not know a stranger.
She was an incredibly hard worker, juggling the fore-mentioned jobs as well as delivering mail and cooking at a local restaurant. She did her very best to provide for her family, selflessly working from sunrise to midnight daily for many years.
Crystal had an amazing ability to stay positive and make the best out of even the most difficult situations. This served her well in her final years as she battled and beat bladder cancer. She never once complained about the exhausting treatments or the repeated trips to Bismarck. She was also an advocate for her fellow residents; was always looking out for them and ready to lend a hand no matter the level of pain she was currently in.
She found great joy in sending cards and letters, doing word-finds and puzzles, and playing bingo. She loved collecting Elvis and John Wayne memorabilia and listening to her requested songs on local radio.
She was incredibly proud of her children and grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all. Although there never seems to be enough time with our loved ones, we take comfort in knowing she is finally pain-free and up on her feet again, visiting with all those who have made the journey before her.
She was preceded in death by her parents John and Dorothy Beld and brother Tony Beld. She is survived by her children Maggie Lang (Ann) of Rapid City, SD; Tim Hanna (Kerry) of Palm Coast, FL; Scott Hanna (Stephanie) of Jakarta, Indonesia; and Shawn Hanna of Hettinger, ND. Grandchildren Reba (Lacey), Todd, Drew, Lexi (Tyler), Erica, Dakota, and Emily and great grandson, Greyson as well as siblings Corrine Zehm, Russ Beld, Deb Beld, Ashley Beld, and Alice Anderson.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a financial donation in her memory to the Hettinger Community Clothes Closet, 306 Hwy 12 W, Hettinger, ND 58639 or to the Hettinger 2nd 40 Club, P.O. Box 582, Hettinger, ND 58639.
