Daniel was born in Rapid City, South Dakota with a mental disability, but you would never know it. He was friendly to all he encountered. He was one of the first Special Education Students in the new program at Garfield Elementary School In Rapid City in 1959. The classroom was in the basement next to the boiler room.

Dan loved school, and he was always eager to learn. He excelled to the peak of his abilities.

Dan always found work to do for neighbors and friends. Dan delivered newspapers for the Rapid city Journal and the Rapid City Guide for many years.

It pleased him so much to help others, especially someone in need

He excelled at all sports, mainly Baseball. He was a star player having his sights set on playing baseball in higher leagues, only to be stopped by the written exams. He was an Alumni of the Boy’s Club of Rapid City from the first year when it was located in the old Train Depot. Founded by Roger Erickson

He played softball for many years for the Reptile Gardens sponsored team. Short Stop was his preferred position.

Dan worked for Frontier Ford after he graduated from Roosevelt Special Education in 1969.

He was employed by various businesses, including Handyman, Painter, Roofer laborer until the onset of Arthritis that limited his abilities. But he didn’t let that slow him down. You would see Dan ride his bicycle all over Rapid City on any given day.

Dan collected Sports caps. He had 225 caps including Baseball, Football, Basketball and one Rush Hockey cap.

Dan never met a stranger. Visiting most of the Downtown Stores and pawn shops to add to his collection of Sports cards, Ball caps, Vintage Vinyl records that exceeds over 1,000 also numerous DVDs, the storekeepers all knew him. He liked to talk to anybody about anything.

For Thirty Years Saint Therese Knights of Columbus was a large part of his life. He was honored many times for his contributions to their mission.

Dan spent a year in Portland, Oregon helping his cousin care for his father who suffered from dementia.

Then he traveled to Virginia Beach, Virginia to care for another uncle with Alzheimer\'s

Dan stayed with his Aunt Jackie Warn while in Virginia Beach for several months. His Aunt Jackie and three daughters Tracy, Dawn And Pawnee with Dan all visited Washington DC. Dan was able to see the White House.

Dan had a gentle and understanding way with people. No matter how he was treated he always was kind in return.

For 20 years Dan was a member of a coffee club that met at the Cleveland Street McDonalds in Rapid City Twice Daily. He made them all laugh.

Daniel Warn Westin Shall be missed.

Dan was preceded in death By his father Edward Westin in 1977, His Mother Agnes Westin in 2014 and his younger brother Darwin Westin in 2021.
