Darrell G. McNabb, 72, Rapid City, died Saturday, July 6, 2019 at Regional Health Home Plus Hospice. He was born August 15, 1946 in Gage, OK to Elbert and Esther E. (Steinley) McNabb. He was a toddler when they moved to South Dakota after the family purchased a ranch near Caputa. He lived the ranch life growing up with the farm animals and cattle in the pasture. He attended a country school with his three brothers and the 4 Norman sisters. He often said that they rode their bikes to school, uphill both ways. This ranch life wasn’t an easy one for him, but one he still held close to his heart. In 1956 he moved to Rapid City with his mother and brothers. He attended Rapid City schools, graduating from RCHS in 1964. Shortly after that his adult life started. He married Connie Ashley in 1965, and they began their family of three sons. He started employment in 1966 at Black Hills Power and Light. He put in 42 years of service saying it was a job he loved and was one he was very proud of. Darrell had a love of the Black Hills spending many weekends camping and fishing with family and friends. These camp weekends were full of boating, fishing, outdoor cooking, and stories told at the campsite fire. He also had a passion for stock car racing. He enjoyed being a pitman at the local racetrack, Black Hills Speedway, and also traveling around to several NASCAR races watching his favorite drivers perform. He liked to travel, chauffeuring his family around different parts of the country. Later on, he would get on a bus, taking the grand tours, letting the bus driver lead the way. Another important part of his life was watching his sons participate in sports, whichever the season would bring. He was a quiet observer, very seldom showing much emotion. He kept that inside, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t enjoying every minute of their game play. He would bring his folding chair to the outfield of a baseball game, get settled to watch a quiet, calm couple of hours of baseball. Soon after, a person would glance out to center field area and see several other folding chairs gathered around him, with other fathers watching the game from his point of view. Darrell had gathered many friends in his lifetime; friends from Jr high and high school. Certainly he gained many lifetime friends from the workplace. He had great neighborhood friends. Friends he acquired from the local sporting events he attended. Stock car and NASCAR friends have been true and dear. Plus he had strong relationships with the friends of his three sons. He sort of fit in most anywhere he went. He is survived by his wife Connie McNabb and three sons, Gene (Jennie), Rob (Barb) and Gregg (Jena); six grandchildren, Falon, Caden, Jevon, Jayda, Paige and Morgan and two brothers, Dennis and Eldon. He is preceded in by his mother Esther Mcnabb and brother Elbert.
