Obituary For David J. Horton
David James Horton, age 91, passed away on Sunday, December 1, 2024, in Rapid City, SD. He was born on September 17, 1933, in Belvidere, Illinois, to Kenneth and Olive (Glass) Horton. The third of six children, David grew up in a small town where his childhood was marked by adventure and mischief.
David graduated from Belvidere High School in 1952, and alongside a group of his closest friends, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He proudly served as a veteran of the Korean War and was a longtime member of the American Legion and VFW Post 1273.
On April 15, 1955, David married his fiery redhead, Bonnie. Together, they had two children, David Jr. and Tammela Lynn. Throughout his life, David was a man of many pursuits. He worked in construction, drove trucks, and owned several businesses, including a gas station and a bar, The Water Hole in Box Elder, SD. He also worked at his brother-in-law’s auto salvage yard, B&B Auto Salvage.
David and Bonnie later ventured into the restaurant business, operating Bobee’s and The Sugar Shack, where they became beloved figures in the local community. Their restaurant, known for its famous Sugar Burger, created lifelong friendships and fond memories. After selling the businesses, David and Bonnie embraced a semi-retired life, traveling and enjoying their time together.
In March of 1999, David’s world was turned upside down with the loss of Bonnie. Years later, Dorothy came into David's life, and the two shared many happy years together until her passing in July 2019. David moved in with his daughter and son-in-law, Tammela and Greg Murray, where the three of them enjoyed each other’s company and shared many joyful moments.
In June 2021, David faced the devastating loss of his only son, David Jr. A part of his heart went with him that day.
David is survived by his daughter, Tammela and son-in-law Greg Murray of Rapid City, SD; 14 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren; his brother, Bob; and his sister, Julie. He is preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie; his son, David Jr.; Dorothy; and siblings, Charles, John, and Morris.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Avantara Mountain View Nursing Home for their care and support.
David's legacy of hard work, generosity, and love for his family will always be remembered. May he rest in peace.
