Obituary For Dolores Marie Kinyon

Dolores “Marie” (Kirk) Kinyon, 88, passed away February 23, 2025 at Avantara St. Cloud Nursing Home in Rapid City, SD.

Marie, the eldest daughter of Robert H. Kirk and Dolores Marie (Ortman) Kirk, was born May 19, 1936, in Minneapolis, MN. She moved to Huron, SD, in 1942 where she completed grade and high school. Marie graduated from St. John’s School of Nursing in Huron as a Registered Nurse in 1957. She was united in marriage to Keith G. Kinyon on March 15, 1957, he was a navigator in the Air Force, and they made their home at various air bases in the Midwest over the next 16 years. Marie was widowed in 1974 when Keith was killed in an accident.

Marie became a member of OLPH Cathedral Parish in 1978 when she moved to Rapid City. She was active in Catholic Daughters, the Blue Army of Our Lady of Fatima, and South Dakota Right to Life. She was instrumental in starting and coordinating the Eucharistic Adoration program at OLPH in Rapid City during the 1980’s and 1990’s. Marie was particularly committed to helping others learn about the Scapular, the Rosary, and Our Lady of Fatima. She was unequivocally pro-life and a prayer intercessor to anyone who asked. Throughout her life Marie cherished her Holy Hour and attended daily Mass, she loved the lives of the saints and spent many hours teaching them to her grandchildren. She enjoyed travel, history, and music but her family was the joy of her life. Every summer Marie and her children and grandchildren spent time at Leech Lake near Walker, MN.

Survivors include her children, John (Chris) Kinyon of Couer d’Alene, ID, Carolee (Mark) Weber of Sioux Falls, Linda (Lonny) Hofer of Rapid City, Dan (Ginger) Kinyon of Bluffton, S.C., Jim (Lisa) Kinyon of Rapid City; 16 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. Marie is survived by her brothers Robert Kirk of Rapid City, John Kirk of Pierre, SD, Paul Kirk of Wheat Ridge, CO and her sisters Ann Wullweber of Huron, SD and Katherine Roddis of Rapid City, SD.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to OLPH Cathedral of Rapid City. The family wishes to extend sincere thanks to the Avantara Nursing Home staff who provided such kind compassionate care.

I am so sad to hear of Aunt Marie's Passing! Aunt Marie was an absolute Angel! She was the most loving person I have ever known! I remember her infectious smile, and laugh, and her wonderful personality, and outlook on life! She was the strongest catholic, and was very grounded in her faith! I have fond memories of our wonderful times together, working church functions, visiting over a meal, and coffee, and a burger, and fries at McDonalds , which was a daily event for our family! Friday night Dinners at Bonanza Sirloin pit growing up, was something that I looked forward to each week! Times spent playing marathons of 500 was also something that I will never forget! Times spent at the Lake in the beautiful Black Hills, and so many more memories, to many to share. She was so funny, and always lit up every room, she entered! I loved all of our conversations about always wearing my scapular, going to adoration, world events, getting to daily mass, and keeping God First in all things! Her work for the right to life movement, was amazing! Aunt Marie, I will miss you so much, and I Love you! You will be greatly missed by everyone!
