Elaine (Silva) Delores Holy Eagle was born at home in Lantry, SD on August 23, 1946 to James and Catherine Silva Holy Eagle. She was given several Lakota names including, Okuge Ti Win and Wakiya Luta Win. She left this earth on Thursday, October 10, 2019. Elaine attended elementary schools in California, secondary schools on Cheyenne River Reservation at Bear Creek in a one room school house and at Old Cheyenne Agency in Eagle Butte. She then attended Oglala Community School in Pine Ridge where she enjoyed her high school days. Elaine was proud to be a Thorpe and made many lifelong friends. She was a pom pom girl, jumped on the trampoline during half time games and was in choir. Elaine advanced her education by attending Northern State University in Aberdeen in the teacher\'s program. She had many experiences in her life that shaped her, one of them being a survivor of the Rapid City Flood in 1972. Education was important to her and wanted the same for her children and grandchildren. Elaine was a tutor at EB Bergquist Elementary School and a computer aide at Robbsindale Elementary School. She decided to finish her education by attending Oglala Lakota College Rapid City Extension. Elaine graduated from OLC with her Bachelor\'s in Education and was pleased to say that she read 5,000 children\'s books for her degree. Elaine encouraged her children to continue their education and she set the example. She went on and graduated with her daughter, Renay Youpee, each receiving their Master\'s Degree in Lakota Leadership and Management. Elaine continued to work in the Rapid City Area Schools as the Homeless and Migrant Coordinator. Elaine worked for the school district for 35 years. Her slogans, \"Even a Crayon Has a Home\" and \"Homeless Not Hopeless”, rang through all that she did. Elaine was an adjunct and taught college classes at Oglala Lakota College He Sapa Center and SD School of Mines. Elaine was active in the community by volunteering for Head Start where her twins attended pre-school, volunteered for Youth Development Summer Program, was on the Johnson O\'Malley Board, was a CASA volunteer and on the Rapid City Indian Health Board. She could be found where the people gathered, at Job Service, at Boys Club telling Lakota stories and was involved in the homeless shelters. She created partnerships throughout the community to find resources for her students and families. She was a part of the Kiwanis program to purchase shoes for the homeless students, the Backpack program to send food home with students. Elaine coordinated with people in the community and brought the Lakota Culture to the Rapid City Schools and did cultural awareness training for programs in the Rapid City area. She lived by the Lakota Virtues, was a Sundancer and loved her culture. Waunsila was Elaine\'s virtue because she loved her family, friends and students and tried to help each one in some way. She never treated anyone below her and had care and concerns for others. If someone needed something, Elaine would do her best to help him or her get it or find it. Elaine enjoyed going to activities at Christ Church in Red Shirt where the Robert Two Bulls family received her as family. She liked to participate by donating for Christmas gifts and Easter baskets for the church congregation. Her impact on the Rapid City community, her family and friends was continuous throughout her life. Elaine\'s presence will be remembered and dearly missed. In her last days she confessed her sins and accepted Jesus as her Lord and Saviour as witnessed and lead in prayer by her twins, Rodney and Renay. Elaine is now with God in Heaven. Elaine was preceded in death by her parents: James and Catherine Silva Holy Eagle; her grandchildren: Baby Sarah Ann Silva and Baby Rico Francisco, Delores and Charles Michael Richards II. Elaine is survived by her sisters: Maria Holy Eagle, Sonja Holy Eagle; brother: Dino Holy Eagle and sister: Dixie Holy Eagle; her children: Renay (Marvin) Youpee, Rodney (Karen) Silva, Ann Haines, Enrique \"Rico\" Delores, Erik Medicine, Wade Medicine and Kolette \"Kolee\" Medicine; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, aunties, uncles, nieces and nephews.
