Obituary For Faye O. Farrens

Our beloved Faye Farrens passed away Tuesday, March 21, 2023, after a brief illness. Faye was born March 17, 1924, to Walter & Hannah Jershua (Geagley) Cochran in Bedford, IA. She was born the third of seven children and grew up during the Great Depression.

After graduation from High School in 1942, Faye moved to Washington D.C. where she started working at the Pentagon as a confidential secretary for the army for 2 years before moving back home. Once back in Iowa she met Kenneth Farrens and after 3 months they married on December 30, 1944, before he was deployed into military service. Faye and Kenneth welcomed their first son, Wayne, in May 1946 and then a second son, Gene, in February 1948.

The young family assisted Kenneth’s parents on the farm near Gravity IA until 1954 when they moved briefly to Florida and then to Cheyenne, WY where they lived until 1962, when they then moved again to Hot Springs, SD. While raising her children, she worked at various jobs and doing the books at her husband’s gas station. After her sons were raised and gone, the couple moved to Eufaula, OK where they lived until 1998 when they moved to Rapid City. After Ken passed away in 1999, Faye became very active at the Minneluzahan Senior Center helping with the weekly bingo and monthly fun bus trips to Deadwood, SD. Faye also attended the Canyon Lake Senior Center. Faye was very independent and drove her car until her 96th birthday.

Ms. Faye and I have been friends for almost 11 years. We met at Canyon Lake Activity Center, where we both worked the bingo activity. Faye also played, of course, and seemed to have a lucky streak about her. We bonded instantly. One thing that was always so important to her was that she have her hair and nails done at the beauty shop before she arrived. Since I was a retired hair stylist, that was always an important subject to discuss...if the color was correct, how was the curl and style, what about the red she wore on her nails - too flashy or just right? We had a great discussion about it every week. Ms. Faye ALWAYS greeted you with a big smile and a hug. She had a very special way about her that made you feel good when in her company. Once Covid arrived, I didn't get to see her as often as I'd like, but we kept in touch by telephone, or Gene would drop her by so she could buy Football books. She love to gamble with our (Canyon Lake Activity Center) Football pools. I would send her our monthly Newsletter with a note and ,of course, she would always follow up with a phone call. I will miss her deeply, but will never forget her. I have her picture at my desk at work, so I can look at her smile when I need to. - Posted by Jodie Bunker on March 23, 2023

I miss Faye terribly. She was such a sweet lady, always had a smile warm welcome when she saw me. I was one of her "girls. You couldn't help but love her back. I miss that. She was a special lady. - Posted by Helen Nupen on March 26, 2023
