Deck (Maria) and four great grandchildren, Jessica M. Valdez (Christian) and three great grandchildren, Matthew C. Deck, AJ Arnburg, and Samantha Arnburg. And many other close family and friends.

He was preceded in the passing of his beloved son Carl G. Deck (July 19, 1966 – December 13, 2006). His parents and brother Richard Deck.

Gene is a USAF Military veteran of 22 years.

Honorary pallbearers are Jerry A. Hamilton, Carl Joseph Duwenhoegger, Randall G. Deck and Peter Dowse.

Gene is a member of the Blessed Sacrament Church and a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 8844.

Gene grew up in Cincinnati Ohio and graduated from Anderson High School on May 29, 1957, 2 days after graduation he enlisted in the US Airforce.

Gene was baptized a catholic in 1957 and eventually met and married his wife of 59 years in Rapid City South Dakota on August 3, 1963. They were married in the Blessed Sacrament Church in Rapid City, his first two children were baptized there and we will now have his final mass there.

Gene served in the US Airforce from May 31, 1957 to January 31, 1979. He spent many hours climbing Satellite communication towers and installing the equipment himself on the towers and installed the large “Earth Stations” on the ground below the satellite receiving stations. We remember our Mom being so worried that he was so high in the air! He traveled extensively throughout his career and has been in every state except one.

During his time in the military, he was stationed at 12 Airforce bases including Anderson AFB in Guam from Dec. 1966 to June 1968. He was the communications engineer in the plane that flew President Johnson over Vietnam and to Vietnam during the war. Gene also met five other presidents in a similar manner. He received many promotions, awards and accommodations. Many of those accommodations were for leading his teams. He retired as a Master Sargent. We know how he kept everything; he has kept every one of the letters, there are over 50 of them. Gene was very proud of his service to his country.

After retiring from the military in Anchorage, Alaska where he was stationed at Elmendorf AFB with his family for 10 years, Gene had a career as an engineer in Satellite Communications for several years with Wold Communications Inc later known as Keystone Communications in Anchorage where he was instrumental in bringing live television to Alaska. Eventually moving to Keystone Communication’s main headquarters in Los Angeles, CA. Where he was instrumental in bringing live Olympic events to the world on television. And many other live sporting events and concerts in the US and around the world.

Gene went on to form his own engineering consulting company GHD Engineering where he continued his work in the Satellite communications field.

Gene loved the outdoors and enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and race car driving. He went back to Alaska several times after leaving for hunting and fishing trips. He was also in several bowling leagues, enjoyed golfing and coaching Carl’s baseball team.

He was an avid Ham Radio operator with the call sign of WOPYZ. He was involved in several Iditarod Races at the checkpoints in very desolate places, one time actually living with an Eskimo family in an igloo near Nome!

Gene Howard Deck, The man I am ever so grateful to call my papa for the last 24 years of my life. I, his youngest granddaughter Samantha Arnburg am beyond proud to be able to even be related to Gene Deck. My earliest memory of my papa is when I was about 3 and went to my grandparents' house to go swimming in what I thought was a pool as big as the ocean, I remember thinking it was sooo big but I was big too and didn't need my floaties anymore. So... I took them off and jumped right off the diving board. Luckily my cousin Randy was there to save me from drowning, but when my mom pulled me from the pool, I remember how worried my grandparents' face looked and at that moment knew how much they cared. At the young age of 4 they moved away, and I was heartbroken, but I did speak on the phone often with them. I sent my kindergarten project flat Stella to them and the very organized and precise man my papa was he sent her back with a very detailed and organized book with all the places they took her which I still have today. My grandfather was a very humble man and didn't brag about all of the achievements he had throughout his life and trust me there were too many to count. Listening to the stories he had to tell was like reading a good book, I could never get enough, I wanted him to keep going and I was lucky enough to capture a video of one of his stories one of these last times I visited. One of the lasts memories I have with him is when he asked my mom and I to buy him bread a simple task you might think, but as we all know when it comes to Gene nothing is simple. He had us go into Sam's club and gave us a very detailed task to get him a loaf of Dave's Good Seed Bread, he made sure to let us know it was in a clear bag with a yellow label across it that says "Good Seed" this was the only bread he ate and that it would be at the back of the store and it should be in the first section in a twin pack, if we went past the first section we went too far and that if they didn't have this exact bread he didn't want any other bread! I still laugh at how detailed and stern he was about his bread. A week before he passed I actually bought a loaf in his honor and enjoyed eating it in his remembrance after he passed. My grandfather is and always will be one of the smartest, hardworking and dedicated men I know. I will forever love and miss him and am grateful I had him for the 24 years I've lived so far. I love you Papa and I hope you're enjoying your good seed bread in heaven, make sure to have one ready for when we meet again. Love your Granddaughter, Samantha - Posted by Samantha on January 26, 2023

My deepest sympathy to the family. When Gene and Mary would come into the store, It was always such a pleasure. One of my many memories of Gene is the following: Whenever he would introduce himself, either in person or on the phone, Gene would say "Gene Deck- like a deck of cards." Gene will be missed. We wanted to attend Gene's visitation. At this time we will not be able to attend.
