Obituary For Ian Jolly Flockhart

Ian Jolly Flockhart, 81 of Rapid City, SD passed away on January 31st, 2022 at Monument Health Hospital in Rapid City, South Dakota. Ian was born on September 23rd, 1940 in West Mifflin, PA to David and Mary (Jolly) Flockhart. He graduated from Munhull High School in 1959 and enlisted in the Air Force. Ian met Sandra Lee Yates when they were children on a boat traveling to Scotland to visit relatives. Their mothers were friends in Pennsylvania and happened to be traveling to the same small village in Scotland. Ian, a few years her senior, called her ‘the kid” for years until he saw her in a different light when they were teenagers. Ian and Sandra were married on October 19th, 1962 at Winchester Methodist Church in Winchester, West Virginia. Together, they had two sons, William and Doug. Ian’s Air Force career took them all over the United States, from Texas to Ohio, then Alaska, and finally settling in South Dakota. After several tours to Vietnam, Ian retired from the Air Force in 1982. Ian went on to do many jobs around Rapid City and surrounding areas including driving a delivery truck and then co-owning a business refurbishing vehicle starters and alternators. Ian, or Pap Pap, as he was lovingly referred to by many, loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren both biological and “claimed.” He enjoyed trips to Custer State Park with his family, fishing, family BBQs, and just sitting at his house and enjoying their company. A few years after Sandy passed, Ian reunited with an old friend that had lived down the road from Ian and Sandy for many years. Peggy brought a spark back into Ian. On March 5th, 2020, they were married surrounded by friends and family. Together they spent the last few years going on adventures, doing home improvement projects, and laughing. Ian is survived by his wife of 2 years, Peggy Flockhart, sons William (Carmen) and Doug (Mary Jo); grandchildren Scott (Kelli), Christopher (Josh), and Luz; great-grandchildren Kiera, Gaige, William, Cypress, and many nieces and nephews. “Claimed” grandson Robert (Keli) Griffith and great-grandchildren Aiden, AJ, Breanna, and Jackson. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife (Sandra), sister Janet (Robert) Rehburg, brothers Mark and David Flockhart, and Grandson Joshua Flockhart. Memorial service and burial will be held Wednesday, February 9th at 10 a.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD. Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 7023, Merrifield, VA 22116-7023.
