JoAnn K. (Lindberg) Leonard, age 83, passed away peacefully at Monument Health Hospice House in Rapid City, October 14, 2021 JoAnn was born to John Lawrence Lindberg and Helen (Berquist) Lindberg in Buffalo, Minnesota. Her childhood years began on a farm in a home built by her dad. She attended a country grade school in Buffalo and later moved with her family to Minneapolis. For this shy little Swedish girl, the adjustment was quite a challenge. In Minneapolis she was a proud member of the First Covenant Church and enrolled in Minnehaha Academy where she met many lifelong friends and her future husband, William D. Stuart. JoAnn and Bill were unable to have biological children, but she always felt blessed to have chosen (adopted) two children, Kevin and Lisa (Stuart) Marshall. Bringing these children into their lives fulfilled their family. She is lovingly remembered by her children Kevin and Lisa (Roger) both of Rapid City, two grandsons, Travis Marshall, Rapid City, and Andrew (Claire) Marshall, of Gregory, and great granddaughter, Timber Marshall of Gregory: sisters, Jeanne Olsen and Janice Ahlquist both of Minneapolis, and several nieces and nephews. JoAnn had a special love for all animals, but most especially for her dogs Lucky, Molly and Max whom she rescued. JoAnn married Kenneth Leonard and lived in Garrison, ND for several years It was while living in Garrison, at the age of 38, that she entered Trinity School of Nursing in Minot. She graduated at the age of 41, while managing a home, raising a family and driving 80 miles daily to complete her education. JoAnn brought joy to her fellow health care providers as well as being a gentle advocate for each patient in her care. At Rapid City Regional (now Monument Health) she gave of herself to those in MACU and finally retired from Regional Rehabilitation. In addition to her love for nursing, she was a loyal volunteer or member in numerous community organizations such as Chapel in the Hills, Meeting the Need with Dallas and Mary Dietrich, Keystone Senior Center, Chapter BM PEO, Eastern Star, Sons of Norway, Book Club and Darton Society. JoAnn appreciated being a part of the Marine Corp League and loved to dress for the annual ball. Her faith was a major thread which remained a key to her love of life and her ability to overcome obstacles which she faced. She was proud that her grandfather was a pioneer minister and was instrumental in building the Black Hawk Community Church after homesteading near Tilford. Prior to her death, she held dual membership at First Congregational Church of Christ in Rapid City and UCC Church of Keystone. JoAnn was always up for a hike in her beautiful Black Hills, and completed many Volksmarches. She loved any adventure that came her way, especially if there was a hint of Scandinavia. She enjoyed people and always looked forward to monthly lunches with Rehab friends.
