Obituary For Joyce Elaine Dryden

Joyce Dryden, 87, Custer and formerly of Rapid City, passed away June 16, 2020 at Monument Health Custer Care Center. She was a loving mother, sister, grandmother and friend. She had many downfalls in her life, but never gave up, never looked back and always stayed strong. She was an inspiration and hero to everyone she touched. She loved her grandkids, her crafts, sewing, coloring and playing cards with her friend Bonnie every week. Joyce was born in Newell, SD to Raymond and Evelyn (Babbs) Glover on July 22, 1932. They lived in Mystic, SD until March of 1944 when they moved to Oelrichs. While there she met Donald Dryden and they were married March 25, 1951. Later that year, Donald was drafted into the US Army. While he was in Korea, Joyce moved to Huron, SD and stayed with his sister Dollie and her family. After Don returned home from the military, his father Henderson Dryden passed away, so they moved back to Oelrichs to manage the ranch for his mother Georgia. In September 1966, Donald passed away. Joyce stayed home with the kids for a couple years then started working in Hot Springs for Montgomery Wards. After working there for a year, she then worked for National Bank for 3 years and then she worked for the Oelrichs School District until her stroke in 1975. She moved into town after that and still worked at the school part time. Jim and Deb had moved away so in 1992, Deb talked her into moving to Rapid City to be closer to her. She worked part time at the Soil Conservation Office as secretary. In 2003 she moved into the Custer Care Center due to health issues. She always looked forward to her “Chariot” rides to Rapid City to have lunch with her best friends Laree’ Adkins and Barb Aker. Seeing the Badlands and Custer State Park brought back so many memories from her past. Joyce is survived by her son James Dale and soulmate Pat, Alliance, NE; her daughter Debra Dawn Percy, Black Hawk; eight grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren and her sister Evon, East Bend, NC. She is preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Evelyn Glover, her husband Donald and two brothers Wes and Ervin Glover. A memorial has been established and may be sent to: Deb Percy, 6513 Axle Road, Black Hawk, SD 57718
