Obituary For Kerry D. Wood

Kerry Dennis Wood, 70, passed away unexpectedly on August 19, 2023, at Monument Health in Rapid City, SD.

Kerry was born on April 24, 1953, in Alliance, NE to David K Wood and Norma (Coplen) Wood. As a child the family moved frequently between Naval assignments, living in San Francisco, CA, Chula Vista, CA and Cheyenne, WY, before settling permanently in Hemingford, NE.

Following graduation from high school in 1971, Kerry lived in various places including Denver, CO, Davie, Fl and Crawford, NE but a majority of his adult life was spent living in Southern Florida where he met the love of his life, Patricia Rasor. The two were united in marriage on July 17, 1993, at Fort Robinson in Crawford, NE. He returned to the Western Nebraska prairies he loved so much in April 2008 before relocating to Rapid City, SD in 2012.

Kerry possessed a kind, gentle soul, touching lives and hearts everywhere he ventured. He will forever be remembered by his infectious smile, quick wit and laugh. Most of all, we will remember him singing. Kerry had a beautiful voice and from an early age he and his older brother, Kelly, would sing in perfect harmony, doing so for decades.

Kerry is survived by his sister, Kathy Whartman; nephews, Aaron (Natalie) Whartman, Neil (Kelli) Whartman, and great nieces/nephews; Kaydence, Xavier, and Quinn Whartman, of Rapid City, SD. Mariah, Austin, and Logan Wood, of Kansas City, MO, and Aunt Cheryl Taylor of Lincoln, NE. Also, numerous cousins and many, many, lifelong friends.

Kerry was preceded in death by wife, Patty Wood, father, David K Wood, mother, Norma (Coplen) Wood, brother Kelly D Wood and nephew Aaron L Wood.

My prayers go out to Kerry's family and friends in their time of loss. Kerry carried a bright smile and a sense of joy with him everywhere he went. I always enjoyed running into him in the complex hallway and stopping for a chat. He was an exceptional person and will be greatly missed. - Posted by Elisabeth on August 28, 2023
