Obituary For Lorraine E. Slocum

Lorraine Elizabeth Kundert Slocum, Rapid City

Lorraine Elizabeth Kundert Slocum passed away Saturday, April 22, 2023, at Clarkson Health Care at the age of 99. Lorraine Elizabeth Kundert was born July 31, 1923, on a farm north of Java, South Dakota, to O.J. and Maria Kundert. Lorraine attended country school through eighth grade and graduated from Java High School in 1940. She attended Northern State (now Northern State University), in Aberdeen, SD, and afterwards taught in several rural schools in Campbell County. She later taught both lower and upper grades in the Mound City schools.

She married Robert R. Slocum on July 14, 1946, at Selby. They lived in Missoula, MT, and Vermillion, SD, while Bob finished law school after his return from serving in World War II. Lorraine worked at several jobs while her husband finished school. They also started their family during this time, and to their union three children were born: Edward, Robert and Rhonda. When Bob began his private law practice in Mound City, she again taught school there.

Later they moved to Mitchell, SD, where she worked part-time in a friend\'s catering business. They then moved to Richardson, TX, where she was employed by Volt Technical Corporation. The young family moved back to South Dakota in the mid-1960s, and she worked as a secretary at the Pierre Junior High School and for Educational TV (later known as S.D. Public Broadcasting). They moved again in 1971, this time to Mobridge, where she was employed by The Mobridge Tribune for 19 years. After both she and her husband retired, they moved to Rapid City in June of 1999, where they could be closer to some of their children and grandchildren.

Bob passed away in Rapid City on November 19, 2009. Lorraine continued to live in her own apartment until she was 96 years old. She had great friends in the apartment building, and they aided her in her continued apartment life. She moved to Clarkson Mt. View Health Care Facility in August of 2019.

Preceding Lorraine in death were her husband, Bob; her son, Ed Slocum of Eagle Butte; and her grandson, John Slocum of Rapid City, five brothers (Otto, Victor, Herb, Gust and Roy Kundert) and two sisters (Alice Kundert and Frieda Aman).

Lorraine is survived by two children: Bob (Pam) Slocum of Rapid City, SD, and Rhonda (Rick) Rylance of Aberdeen, SD; daughter-in-law, Monica Slocum of Rapid City; seven grandchildren: Elizabeth, Erica, Robert L., Andrea, Mark, RJ and Reid; ten great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many great friends.
