Obituary For Mary Jo Johnston

Mary Jo Johnston, 65, Rapid City, passed away in her home on Wednesday, February 4, 2015. Mary was born on December 15, 1949 in Huron, to Marvelle (Jeffers) and Kenneth Bauman. She was raised on the family farm and attended schools in Broadland and Huron. She graduated from Huron High School in 1968. While working for the State of South Dakota, Mary earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from Black Hills State University. On June 26, 1972, Mary started what became her lifelong career as an Internal Auditor for the SD Department of Transportation. After 37 years of employment with the State of South Dakota, she was awarded an Executive Proclamation by the Governor and January 6, 2012 was declared Mary Johnston Day in her honor. Mary met and later married her husband of 32 years, Dan Johnston, on January 21, 1983. Together they raised their three children in Pierre. Mary enjoyed traveling, sewing, shopping and yelling at Dan. In 2014, they moved to Rapid City to be closer to their children and grandchildren, as they were Mary’s greatest joy, her favorite title being ‘Grandma’. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Marvelle and Kenneth Bauman. Grateful to have shared in her life are her loving husband, Dan; her daughters, Mishelle Wendel and Saboin (Matt) Vifquain; her son Michael (Alycia) Johnston, all of Rapid City; her grandchildren, Rhys, Joseph, Danny, Caylin, Oakley and Ben; her brother, Curt (Louise) Bauman, Huron; and numerous in-laws (or out0laws as she called them”, nieces, nephews and dear friends.
