Melvin "Mike" Eugene Colvin passed away March 25, 2012 at the age of 84 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Mike Colvin was born on August 18, 1927 in Kimball, SD to Florence and Robert Colvin. He lived the majority of his childhood in White Lake, SD, with his four brothers and sisters. White Lake was the backdrop for the stories he would tell us about walking to school, ten miles, bare foot, and uphill both ways in the snow. When he reached the age of 18 he enrolled in the United States Army. After his services he joined his little brother Bun in an adventure of horse racing and began another interest in rodeos with his children in Belle Fourche. There was not much that our beloved father did not do throughout his life. Mike became a barber and most of us can remember the stories and the haircuts we endured over the years. He managed to cut a few heads of hair between his endless naps at the barber shop but his real dream was becoming a country western musician. He always loved to sing and play guitar to entertain everyone. As a member of the Black Hills Country Music Association, there wasn't a town in the area that wasn't familiar with his music. Many years were spent playing music with his band in his night clubs of Little Nashville and Nashville North. Throughout his stories we would often hear about his fighting years but anyone who knew Mike knows that he is really a lover not a fighter. He then started his own business in the flea market circuit. He would buy merchandise that others didn't think would sell and turn it all into profit. This is where he started his family businesses. Traveling back and forth to Arizona became a lifestyle that was unfamiliar to most. Over the years he enjoyed working the flea market by day and playing the guitar by campfire at night. From there things continued to blossom in a way he never imagined, three tourism gift shops, the Hill City Cafe in South Dakota, and four different sites at the flea markets in Quartzsite, Arizona. Nothing would ever slow him down. Oh, and did I mention that in addition to all of his life accomplishments he managed to have ten, yes ten children over the years. Each of us has very special memories that we will always carry with us. Mike tried to do his best to make sure that all his children knew they were loved. We will never forget what a strong, compassionate, loving person Mike was. Mike is survived by his wife Patricia Colvin of 29 years and his brother Lee "JR" Colvin, his ten children Crystal Colvin, Krystina Hawki, Jennifer Stras, Curtis Colvin, Chris Colvin, Patrick Colvin, Michael Colvin, Leona Silva, Tama Traux and Wade Colvin, his thirteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren and countless nieces and nephews. Mike will be united with his mother Florence and father Robert Colvin, his sisters Loretta Crawford and Betty Harper and little brother Robert "Bun" Colvin in heaven.
