Obituary For Paula Susanne Marsh
Paula Susanne Marsh, 81, died January 23, 2021 at the State Veterans Home in Hot Springs, South Dakota. She was born September 25, 1939 in Detroit, Michigan to Paul and Roberta (Sherman) Mains. Her early years were spent in Northern Michigan with the family moving to Arizona and finally settling in Rapid City. Paula graduated from Rapid City High School and went on to continue her education throughout her life. She loved horses from childhood and met Cecil Marsh at the fairgrounds showing horses. The couple married November 18, 1961 in Rapid City. Paula’s working career was always in the banking/accounting field. Paula and Cecil purchased a property on Spring Creek Road and started a pure-bred Arabian horse ranch. They showed horses all over the United States with Paula sewing elegant costumes for the shows. Their horse business eventually took them to the state of Oregon where they lived and continued to show for a number of years. Upon retirement they returned home to Rapid City to be closer to family. Paula and her sister Sandi collaborated in writing and publishing two children’s books. Paula belonged to the Black Hills Celtic Society and treasured her Scottish heritage. She was also a member of the Society of Black Hills Pioneers. She worked at the Dahl Fine Arts Center and thoroughly enjoyed the artist community. Paula was an accomplished artist and seamstress. Her attention to detail was remarkable. While she had no children of her own she was second mom to many and had many cherished friendships. She had the great ability of making everyone feel valued. Her positive attitude and sense of humor made you want to be her friend. She was preceded in death by her parents, her only sibling Sandra Mains Haskell and nephew Steve Haskell. She is survived by her husband of 59 years Cecil Marsh (Hot Springs), brother-in-law Bob Haskell, nephew Terry (Becky) Haskell, nieces Bobbi (John) Brown & Leslie (Bob) Warax. Great nieces, Amanda (Tom) Ruddy, Erin Brown (Kyle Krause) and great nephew Colin Brown (Rocio Diaz). Great-great nieces, Alexis Ruddy, Abagail Andersen, Molly Krause and great-great nephew Ben Krause. She was a member of Atonement Lutheran Church. Due to Covid-19 a family only service will be held. Interment will be at the Bear Butte Cemetery. Behrens-Wilson Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements.
