Pearl Adele Sanders Taylor, 88, died Sunday, March 13, 2011, at Rapid City Regional Hospital, surrounded by her family. She was born September 29th 1922 at home in Caputa, SD to Elmer Pearl and Gerda Adele (Peterson) Sanders. When she was 9 years old her family moved from Caputa to Pactola, SD where her family owned a ranch. Pearl rode her horse to school from the ranch to Pactola where she finished grade school. She commuted weekly to high school on the Crouch Line Railroad, staying in Rapid City during the school week with family and friends. She graduated from high school in Rapid City, SD in 1940. She attended Black Hills Commercial College and received a certificate in Stenography. Pearl married her childhood friend and high school sweetheart, Richard Louis Taylor on October 29th, 1943. They briefly lived in Seattle, Washington during WWII where Richard worked for Boeing Company and Pearl worked as a secretary. They returned to South Dakota where they ranched in the Black Hills. Pearl and Richard owned the Golden Rule Hereford Ranch in the Rapid Valley, Deerfield, and Pactola areas and raised 3 daughters. Pearl worked at Rushmore Mutual Life for several years while also working on the ranch, doing the bookkeeping and keeping the kids involved in many 4-H and school activities.Pearl accepted her 44 year Cattle Woman Award at the Stock Growers Annual Meeting in 1995. Also in 1995, Pearl and Richard were recipients of the Rapid City Chamber of Commerce “Aggie Award” for their service to agriculture in South Dakota. The Taylors’ dedication and involvement in agricultural activities earned them a spot in the 2005 Black Hills Stock Show Hall of Fame. She continued living at their Pactola home following Richard’s death in 2009 after 66 years of marriage.Pearl enjoyed cooking, sewing, knitting, crocheting, crossword puzzles, playing scrabble and most of all enjoying her kids, grandkids, and great grandkids. Survivors include three daughters, Pamela (Curt) Johnson, Piedmont, Patricia (Jerrold) Vaughn, Pactola, and Susan (Gary) Thar, Gillette, Wyo.; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Richard; her parents; her brothers Walter (infant), Jesse, Bob, and Bill Sanders; and granddaughter Gina Thar.
