Obituary For Raymond Douglas Herron

Raymond Douglas Herron, 75, of Rapid City, passed away on April 10, 2021 in Kansas City, Missouri. Raymond was born on March 23, 1946 in North Platte, Nebraska to Charles C. and Shirley J. Herron.

Ray’s father Charles was in the Air Force and with that occupation he took Ray and his mother for a four-year tour to Puerto Rico when Ray was very young. They returned to Rapid City, South Dakota upon completion of that tour in 1956 and Ray lived here ever since.

He attended school in Rapid City and graduated from Rapid City High School in 1964. Before he began his career as a Civilian Technician, he worked at several jobs in the community before becoming full time in the National Guard in 1970.

Sergeant Major Ray Herron enlisted in the South Dakota Army National Guard on January 20, 1966. He joined the 109th Engineer Group as Radio Operator and attended basic training at Fort Lewis, Washington and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Ord, California. He retired on March 31, 2006 after 40 years of service.

Ray married Connie R. Campbell of Rapid City on February 18, 1967 and they had two daughters Kari Lynn and Lori Anne. Ray also had four grandchildren: Alexandria Morgan, Emily Simonson, Courtnie Morgan, and Noah Simonson.

Ray enjoyed spending his free time with his family, traveling on their motorcycle or in their RV. Ray is preceded in death by his parents and his infant brother.
