Ruth M. Bruce, 99, Rapid City, passed away peacefully Wednesday, April 15, 2020 at Westhills Healthcare. She had been a resident of Westhills Retirement Community since 1999. Ruth was born March 7, 1921 in Lake Preston, South Dakota to Marvin and Margaret (Patterson) Johnson. She attended school in Lake Preston graduating from high school in 1939. She then attended Yankton College and received her teacher’s certificate in 1941. Ruth was hired by the Wasta School to teach the lower grades. She taught for two years and moved to Rapid City where she worked for Rapid City National Bank. Ruth married Charles ‘Bud’ Bruce on November 17, 1945 at her parents’ home in Lake Preston. They lived in Rapid City in an apartment where the Federal Building now stands and returned to Wasta in 1949. She taught in schools including, Venhuizen School and Elm Springs School. Bud and Ruth adopted Richard Charles and later Barbara Ruth. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and an active member of the Wasta Methodist Church. They enjoyed traveling around the United States including Alaska and Hawaii. They also went to the Caribbean Islands, England, Scotland, and Scandinavian countries. Following Bud’s retirement, they traveled by RV and spent the winters in Salton City, CA for 20 years. Bud and Ruth moved to Rapid City in 1999. Bud died September 25, 2003. Ruth enjoyed spending time with family especially attending get togethers and activities that grandchildren participated. She enjoyed living at Westhills Village. Ruth is survived by her daughter, Barbara (Chris) Hall; 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, Richard and a brother, Lloyd Johnson.
