Obituary For Shirley M Payne

Shirley M. Payne left this world on March 20, 2020, at the age of 91, to join her soul mate of 72 years. She was born in Mitchell, South Dakota on September 5, 1928 to Bruce and Anna (Bodeiker) Zundel. Her early years were spent in the farming community near Plakinton and White Lake. She was the fourth of six children. Shirley met her future husband while working on his brother’s farm. Ralph left to serve his country during WW II. The day after he returned, they eloped. One of her favorite stories was when they got back to their hometown they went to the local bar to celebrate their marriage. One of their friends offered to buy them a drink. They refused but the friend said, “No, this is on me, when you two get married you can buy me one.” Mom still laughed at that because they were already married—“and we never did buy her that drink”. In addition to raising five children, she worked outside the home. She held a variety of jobs including candling eggs, skinning minks, making ceramics and candles for the Gladys Wax Company and , before retirement, she worked for Control Data. Shirley is survived by daughter, Dianna (Ken) Trusty, Kathie (George) Cleppe, Connie (Larry) Kapfenstein and son, Monnie (Cheryl) Payne. She leaves behind 19 grandchildren; 46 great grandchildren; 12 great great grandchildren, a brother Harold Zundel and many nephews and nieces. She is preceded in death by her husband, Ralph, May, 2019, a son, Bruce in 2009, an infant daughter, Vicki Jo in 1949, two brothers and two sisters.
