Obituary For Virginia A. Borresen

Virginia (Virgie, Ginny, Nanny) Ann Borresen, 88, of Rapid City, SD passed away peacefully on August 16th, 2023 at her residence with her granddaughter, Aubrey, by her side holding her hand.

Virginia was born on July 5th, 1935 in Mitchell, SD and was the oldest of 5 siblings. Her parents, Harold Plouffe and Dorothy Plouffe (Durst) lived with little means as they raised their 5 children who included Virginia, Dan Plouffe, Tom Plouffe, Jack Plouffe, and Judy Plouffe (Snider). Virginia was best known to her siblings as the 2nd mom in the family. Virginia was often responsible for the care of the children and home while her parents worked. Virginia took immense pride in caring for her siblings and it showed her love and devotion to all of them.

At 17 years old, Virginia met her husband Gerald (Jerry, Papa) Borresen at a local dance hall where they loved to dance and mingle with friends. They were married in Deadwood, SD on June 7th, 1953 and celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary shortly before his passing on August 28th, 2018. This love for dance brought them much happiness throughout their lives as a couple. Some of the things they enjoyed over the years were traveling, riding their motorcycle through the hills, bowling, staying at casinos, dinners out, shopping together and working together at various jobs through the years. Virginia and Jerry had two sons; Mark Borresen with daughter in-law Terry Borresen and Rand Borresen with daughter in-law Lori Borresen. Both sons took an active role in caring for their parents through the years.

Virginia and Jerry lived and raised their 2 sons in many different cities while Jerry was enlisted in the military. His military career took them to; Cheyenne, WY, Taipei, Taiwan, Sumter, SC, Phoenix, AZ, Menomonee Falls, WI and Rapid City, SD. One of their most prized trips was taking a motorcycle trip across the country to California for their 25th wedding anniversary. They loved the area so much they packed up from Rapid City, SD and moved to the golden state living there for 30+ years and enjoying their retirement together. Although Virginia and Jerry loved to move and travel, they always considered Rapid City, SD home and moved back in 2013. One thing they loved most about moving back was being able to spend time with their grandchildren and great grandchildren; Aubrey and Craig Oyler, Brent and Karabeth Borresen and great grandchildren; Brooklynn Oyler, Trevor Oyler, Anastelle Borresen and Isabelle Borresen. Moving back to Rapid City was not an easy move and not just because of the weather. Virginia and Jerry had to make the difficult decision to leave California and by doing so, left behind her brothers, her son Rand and wife Lori and 2 grandchildren; Jerad Borresen and Natalie Borresen all of CA who they were very close to. They stayed connected by treasured long-distance calls, keeping up with their activities and lives. Virginia and Jerry knew by moving to Rapid City in 2013, this inevitably would be their last move. They lived out their lives in a small family home with their dog, Chico, who they loved like a child. Chico would bring them both much happiness and would keep Virginia company after Jerry passed.

Virginia was preceded in death by her biological parents, her stepfather Roy Swanson, brother Jack Plouffe and her husband, Jerry, of 65 years. Both Jerry and Virginia will be put to rest with family by their side at the Black Hills National Cemetery with military honors at a later date. It is their best wish that family stay together and watch out for each other.
